The shape of art to come

Art galleries, with characteristic wilfulness, do their hibernating in summer. Many venues are only just emerging from their slumbers in preparation for a new season, with the first shows giving us some impression of the shape of things to come.

The Irving Sculpture Gallery has made a flying start with the work of young sculptor Adrian Mauriks, showing for the first time in Sydney. There are some outstanding pieces in this exhibition, including a mixed media construction called Dreamer II and a series of solid wooden totems, reminiscent of Shinto shrines. Mauriks has paid close attention to the demands of the gallery space when preparing this work, and the results of his efforts are very tangible, indeed. The opening is tonight from 6 to 8.
